What Do You Want to DO with Your Life??!!

Of course, we all know that the best answer to that question is “I wanna rock!” as coined by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, but we can’t all be front-men for 80’s hair metal bands, so the answer can be a bit more complicated. The beginning of a new year is a natural time to take stock in one’s life; what have you done, what will you do, and is there more out there? If the answer to the last question is “yes,” if it is indeed time for a change, let’s take a look at the steps you might follow to make that change.

Take an honest assessment of yourself. What should you be doing? How would your skills be utilized in the best way? What work environment is best suited to your style and how you prefer to work? What motivates you to get up each day and do your best, and what role or career would provide you with that motivation? What is your Major Definite Purpose, your vision for how you want your life to look, and what will get you there? Answer those (big) questions, and your will identify a starting point for finding your ideal career.

Form your plan. A well thought-out, written plan helps you focus and keeps you on track toward achieving your goal. Write out your vision for the future, and the goals you need to achieve in order to realize that vision. Set a deadline for when you want to start this new career, then set smaller deadlines and benchmarks that you need to achieve along the way. Identify your key constraints— those things that hold you back from reaching your goals— and determine what needs to be done to overcome them. Determine what additional skills or knowledge you need to obtain your dream job and career. Look at the resources you need or already have to get there— who can assist you on the way, and how can your personal network get you to where you want to go. Write everything down, list out all the actions that need to be done to reach your career goal.

Get yourself out there. Marketing yourself is key to landing that dream job and career. Update and polish your resume. Use social media sites like LinkedIn to find key contacts and get yourself in front of them. Identify your areas of excellence— those things that, if you did them consistently, in an excellent fashion, would have the greatest impact on your career and your life and set you apart from others. Use blogs to build your personal brand and establish yourself as an expert and thought-leader in that area. Build your sales skills (you are, after all, selling yourself) so that when the ideal opportunity presents itself you can take advantage and land the position.

Be relentless. This process is not, and should not, be easy; if it were, everyone would have his/her dream job right now. Commit to an action, every day, that will move you toward your career goal. Keep moving, keep working, stay focused on the most important action items on your list in order to achieve your goal. Your perfect job, your chosen career path, and the road to your vision is out there; it is up to you to find it.
