Be a Coach!
Depending on where you look and what source you use, there were between 28 million and 30 million small businesses in the United States in 2018, employing upwards of 60 million people. “Small businesses” are defined as companies that have a max of 250 or 1,500 employees, depending on the industry. Based on that definition, over 99% of businesses in America are “small.” Furthermore, nearly 90% of businesses in America have fewer than 20 employees, and nearly 23 million businesses have no employees at all—“solopreneurs” unite! The truly “small” businesses really are the backbone and growth engine of our economy.
Working with and coaching small businesses is where my passion lies, and it is the focal point (get it?!) of FocalPoint’s coaching culture. We work with those small business owners who love what they do, but may be stuck on how to grow, scale, reach their goals, or simply find their versions of success. Business ownership can feel like a lonely place, with a lack of accountability and no one to turn to for advice, direction, and focus. This is where professional coaches come into play. We fill that advisory role, we equip business owners and entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed, we provide the accountability that they cannot get from other sources. . . . and we walk the journey with them.
Here is the problem; there aren’t enough of us to go around. Coaching is an underserved industry. By 2018 numbers, there are 50,000 coaching organizations employing about 100,000 employees. Even if only 10% of the small business owners out there have any interest in receiving coaching, that is still far too many for the current coaches to support. I am a firm believer that all ships rise with the tide, and because of that, I want the coaching industry to grow. There are many fabulous coaching organizations doing fantastic things for their clients. I also believe, however, that FocalPoint is the premier coaching organization in the world. Our training and development is second to none, our content is rich and wonderful, our coaches are at the top of their games, and our Mission—To change the world through business leadership and education— is lived out by all of us, every day.
Locally, John Channon, a fellow FocalPoint coach, and I are actively trying to grow our team, as there are over 500,000 small businesses in the state, and not nearly enough of us to support them. John and I are partnering more and more on projects and engagements, and growing the Minnesota team, adding skillsets and areas of excellence that we do not possess, will allow us to impact more businesses in a more positive way.
Business coaching, at its core, is about being a force-multiplier for change and improvement. As the leader of an organization, you can positively impact that organization; as one who coaches and trains the leaders of multiple organizations, you increase your positive impact exponentially. If you have the desire to lead that change, if you have a passion for improving your community through business, and if you are ready to do something on your own that will have an impact far beyond yourself, then let’s talk. . . . you should be a coach!
